Special Olympics

In 1981 in Wichita, Kansas (USA), Police Chief Richard LaMunyon created the first Law Enforcement Torch Run raising awareness of the Special Olympics and its vital need for program funding. This event was swiftly accepted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and is now recognized as the founding law enforcement organization of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics.

The Torch Run is a running event of officers and athletes carring the Flame of Hope™ to the opening ceremony of local Special Olympics competitions. Law enforcement officers around the world contribute by carrying the Flame of Hope in a Law Enforcement Torch Run final leg every two years in honor of the Special Olympics World Summer or World Winter Games.
