Police Operations Division

The UNC Charlotte Police Operations Division includes foot patrol, bike patrol and uniformed rangers providing campus wide security 24 hours a day. The Department’s mission to protect life and property, while sensitive to the goals of higher education, is accomplished through the enforcement of North Carolina state laws and UNC Charlotte policies. The University provides ongoing education and training for all officers and staff.


Criminal Investigations Division

The UNC Charlotte Criminal Investigations Division (CID) investigates all incidents reported on campus. Experienced investigators handle felonies and serious misdemeanors, and reporting officers perform follow-up investigations on less serious offenses. CID works closely with an array of campus departments including the Dean of Students and Housing and Residence Life and maintains close working relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies including the District Attorney’s Office.

The Criminal Investigations Division:

  • Represents the Police Department at university sponsored training events such as ASPIRE, LEAD, SOAR, and New Employee Orientation.
  • Provides information on police department services, safety tips and steps to prevent work place violence.
  • Assists with special presentations promoting campus safety and security.
  • Serves as part of the Sexual Response Assault Team and as an alternate on the Campus Behavioral Intervention Team.
  • Meets regularly with library security and staff council; conducts security surveys and makes safety recommendations.
  • Attends construction planning meetings to mitigate potential safety and security risks.

Inventory/Fleet Management

The Inventory/Fleet Management Division supplies vehicles and equipment for Police & Public Safety personnel to effectively carry out their duties.


Lost & Found

Lost & Found is maintained by the Administrative Division of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Police & Public Safety Department. It is located in the Facilities Management & Police Building and the hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM (excluding University holidays).

Patrol

The UNC Charlotte Patrol Division consists of fully sworn North Carolina State officers supported by communication dispatchers and parking rangers that protect and serve the University student population, employees, and surrounding community.The Division provides 24 hour security coverage, consists of four squads and is centered on community-oriented policing.

Officers cover a wide range of duties from criminal arrests to medical emergencies; telecommunication dispatchers assist with calls ranging from safety escort requests to crime reports; and parking rangers provide support with roadside assistance and traffic control.


Police Records

The UNC Charlotte Police & Public Safety Department maintains all criminal and non-criminal reports filed with our office. Copies of police reports can be acquired in person at our office located at 9151 Cameron Blvd from 8 AM to 5 PM. Due to the nature of certain criminal incidents and to protect the identity of victims, these reports can only be requested in person.

  • All reports are available 48 business hours from report completion.
  • All requests are responded to within 48 business hours from initial request.
  • Traffic Crash reports are only available through the NCDMV. To request a certified copy of a Crash Report click here.

The UNC Charlotte Police & Public Safety Department follows the public records law established by the North Carolina General Statute 132-1.


Special Units

Bike Patrol

Bike Patrol is one of many ways the UNC Charlotte Police Department ensures campus safety. The Department was one of the first universities to initiate an active bicycle patrol program and currently consists of certified bike officers patrolling campus on police model hybrid mountain bicycles. The Bike Patrol employs community-oriented policing allowing officers to freely interact with members of the campus community and address crime or the fear of crime.

R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense)

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Rape Aggression Defense Program (R.A.D.) consists of a hands on, 12 hour, physical defense course. This women’s only course is designed to develop and enhance self defense options and increase ability to ward off attack. Self awareness enhancing exercises and preplanning measures like walking in groups, home safety improvement ideas, travel preparations and general personal safety tips are discussed.

Tactical Unit

UNC Charlotte Police & Public Safety Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.) is comprised of officers trained in critical incident preparation and response.

University Rangers

The UNC Charlotte Police Department employs University Rangers who are responsible for securing academic buildings during nonbusiness hours. The Rangers also assist with Lost & Found, perform admits, safety escorts and assist the University Police with traffic control. Rangers can also assist motorists who are out of gas or need a jump start, but are not authorized to assist with keys locked in vehicles.
